Two people were killed in Columbus Labor Day shootings and others were injured in a violent holiday for the Fountain City.
A shooting early Monday morning on Miller Road left 34-year-old Brody Birks dead after suffering a gunshot wound, according to police.
Birks was pronounced dead by an emergency room doctor at 3:52 a.m., police said.
Another shooting that occurred around 5:24 p.m. in the Roman Drive and Troy Court area left a 15-year-old male with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Shortly thereafter, a shooting that occurred around 6:40 p.m. in the 6200 block of Trestlewood Drive led to the death of 25-year-old Marcus McLeod, according to officials.
When police showed up, they found the victim lying on the floor suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services took the man to Piedmont Columbus Regional, where he later died.
Lastly, a shooting in the 4400 block of Old Cusseta Road left a 38-year-old male injured, according to police.
CPD said the shootings were all separate, isolated incidents.
“While our Violent Crimes Unit did respond to multiple shootings yesterday (Labor Day), it’s important to clarify that the shootings were not connected,” the police department said in a statement. “Our initial investigations indicate that three of the incidents were domestic in nature, meaning the shooter and the victim were known to each other.”
The police department said it’s not unusual to see more domestic violence cases during long weekends and holidays.
“This can be attributed to various factors, including increased time spent together and heightened emotions during these periods,” CPD said in a statement.
