On August 21, the Maharashtra State Film Awards were held in Mumbai. Veteran singer Sudesh Bhosale was one of the awardees and before the event, he spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama. While discussing his journey, the discussion naturally veered towards Amitabh Bachchan. However, the singer has also sung for 4 Shah Rukh Khan films – Darr (1993), Karan Arjun (1995), Trimurti (1995) and Chaahat (1996). We asked him if both had ever met and how has his interaction been with the superstar.
EXCLUSIVE: Sudesh Bhosale talks about singing for 4 Shah Rukh Khan films: “He told me ‘Aap 90% Bachchan saab ki awaaz mein gaate ho lekin aap ki jo asli awaz hai, woh mujhe zyada pasand hai’”
Sudesh Bhosale replied, “Yes, we have met, and he has always greeted me fondly. Once, he told me in a reality show, ‘Aap 90% Bachchan saab ki awaaz mein gaate ho lekin aap ki jo asli awaz hai, woh mujhe zyada pasand hai’! I joked, ‘Main apne awaaz mein gaunga toh meri dukaan bandh ho jaayegi’.”
The performer continued, “I have sung for everyone – Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Salman Khan, etc. But whenever I sang for Bachchan saab, those songs were hits. I guess uparwaala mujhse kuchh aur chahta hai aur main unke ishaare pe chalta hoon.”
It’s often said that the songs nowadays don’t have the same impact as it was previously. What has gone wrong with today’s music scenario?
Sudesh Bhosale explained, “This happens. When Dilip saab’s Devdas (1955) was released, people complained ‘Saigaal saab ki Devdas (1936) jaisa maza nahin aaya’. When the next Devdas came, people groused that Dilip saab’s Devdas was better. So, this goes on. I feel the youngsters today are very talented and confident. They should be guided properly aur inko khula chhod dena chahiye. Nowadays, there’s a lot of interference by financiers. They would insist ‘Humko yehi word chahiye’, ‘Hollywood ka woh gaana hai, uske jaisa gaana lao’. Hence, they face a lot of restrictions. The lyrics are also questionable. Music kabhi kharab nahin hota hai. Usse kharab banata hai buri likhai. Also, pehle gaana suna jaata tha. Ab gaana dekha jaata hai.”
Sudesh continued, “No one can be compared to Rafi saab, Kishore ji, Mukesh saab, Manna Dey, Lata ji, Asha ji, Bappi Lahiri, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Anand Bakshi, Majrooh Sultanpuri, etc. That was the golden period, and I don’t think we’ll have such an era again. And their songs would go on for another thousand years. Woh samay hi aisa tha. Sab ek doosre ke liye bane the. It was like God sent them for a purpose. These are singers who can make you cry and happy and can even make you dance. Also, the way the singers sang, you could make out if it’s filmed on Madhubala or Meena Kumari.”
He further stated, “Moreover, we used to sing live in those days. This is how I recorded ‘Jumma Chumma’ and other songs. Now, you can sing in parts and also take the help of auto-tune. Ab gaana banta nahin, ab gaana chhapta hai. It’s mechanical. Isliye aatma tadap rahi hai aaj kal.”
Sudesh Bhosale signed off by explaining, “We know that dal, chawal, roti and subzi are good for our health. Yet, we consume pizzas and burgers. Because that’s more popular. The same applies to songs as well!”
