One of the finest filmmakers of Indian cinema, Rakesh Roshan, turned 75 years old today, September 6. Like every year, he was gracious enough to speak exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about his birthday plans, trends in the industry and a lot more.
EXCLUSIVE: Rakesh Roshan talks about his 75th birthday plans; reveals “I plan to RE-RELEASE Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai in January 2025”; says that he’s planning Karan Arjun’s re-release as well
Rakesh Roshan has always maintained that he celebrates his birthday with his family. When asked if he’ll do something different this year as he turns 75, he said there are no such plans, “I’ll celebrate with my family. I am a family-oriented person (smiles).”
The last time Rakesh Roshan threw a big bash was on his birthday 11 years ago, in 2013. On this, he stated, “I have now given up partying. That was a bash we had organized when I turned 64 years old. It took place two months before the release of Krrish 3 (2013).”
We then spoke about the recent trends at the box office and the blockbuster success of Stree 2. Last year, the master filmmaker explained the biggest reason for a film’s success – the audience wants to see a wholesome entertainer. Stree 2 was an ideal film in this regard. Rakesh Roshan agreed, “Stree 2 is very entertaining. We need to give the audience what they want in a film. The audience was waiting for this kind of a film, and they lapped it up.”
Was he astonished that it had crossed the Rs. 500 crores mark? He explained, “That is something that nobody can predict. Every film has its own destiny.”
Views on Re-release, BOGO
A recent trend that has picked up is of re-releasing films. There’s a demand to watch his son superstar Hrithik Roshan’s debut film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000) on the big screen once again. There’s also a generation which was born later and never got a chance to see it in cinemas. Moreover, the musical entertainer, which also marked Ameesha Patel’s debut, will celebrate its 25th anniversary on January 14, 2025, and many feel that it’ll be an ideal time to re-release it.
Rakesh Roshan agreed that they are looking into re-releasing Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, “I plan to re-release it in January 2025.”
His other classic film Karan Arjun (1995) would complete 30 years on January 13 next year. When asked about the possibility of the re-release of the Shah Rukh-Salman Khan starrer, he replied, “The plan is there. But we’ll do it one by one.”
We also asked him his views on the Buy One Get One (BOGO) Ticket Free offer, which has its share of critics as well as supporters in the industry. Rakesh Roshan answered, “I don’t (know) how it’s done and also why it’s done. I have never implemented it, and I had never even heard of it before. It’s a recent thing and I have no idea of the catch behind it. If the film is liked, it is liked. And if the film is not liked, people would not go for it, despite such an offer. Hence, if the makers are trying to push the film by giving one ticket free, it’s not going to help the product.”
Before signing off, we had to ask the question whose answer the industry and fans are waiting to know – when will Krrish 4 go on floors and is there any update? Rakesh Roshan stated, “We are working on it and very soon, you’ll hear something about it”.
