Another former Red Wing will be playing overseas this season.
Dominik Kubalik, a winger who played for Detroit in 2022-23, signed with HC Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss league. The team announced the signing Wednesday via social media. This move comes just two days after former Red Wing Filip Zadina signed with HC Davos in the same league.
Kubalik was a solid winger for Detroit in his lone season with the organization. The 2020 Calder Trophy winner with Chicago signed as a UFA after the Blackhawks didn’t tender him a qualifying offer, then put up 45 points in 81 games, one point shy of his career high in his acclaimed rookie year.
His history with the Red Wings is more known for his being an asset in the trade for Alex DeBrincat last season. Detroit gave up Kubalik, defenseman Donovan Sebrango, a fourth round pick and a conditional first round pick in order to acquire DeBrincat.
In his lone season with the Senators last year, Kubalik’s scoring dried up. He finished with 15 points (11 goals) in 74 games. Meanwhile, DeBrincat scored 67 points in 82 games.
Kubalik’s decision to play in Switzerland is also a homecoming. The Czech winger played for Ambri-Piotta from 2017 to 2019 before he made the jump to the NHL. In each season, he was the only player to score above a point-per-game pace for the team, finishing with 84 points in 75 games. Now, both parties will look to rekindle that production.
