Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has responded to criticism suggesting that his upcoming film, The Buckingham Murders, is a copy of the popular HBO series Mare of Easttown. The film, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, follows a British-Indian detective investigating the murder of a 10-year-old child.

After the trailer for The Buckingham Murders was released, several viewers felt there were similarities between the two projects. One user on X tagged Mehta and questioned the originality of his film. The director, however, dismissed the comparison, urging viewers to watch the film before forming an opinion.

Kareena Kapoor Khan Clarifies Inspiration
During the film’s trailer launch, Kareena Kapoor Khan also addressed the comparisons. She clarified, “The script came to me a year before Mare of Easttown was released. Actors should draw inspiration from different actors; it is kind of a motivation to make you want to do better. I am a huge Kate Winslet fan, and I watch her work closely.”
Hansal Mehta has explicitly stated that The Buckingham Murders is not an adaptation of Mare of Easttown and that the film is an original story with a distinctive narrative.
Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Debut as Producer
In addition to starring in the film, Kareena Kapoor Khan has also made her debut as a producer alongside Ektaa Kapoor. This marks their second collaboration, following the successful films Veere Di Wedding and Crew. Speaking of The Buckingham Murders, it is scheduled to hit theatres on September 13, 2024. The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ash Tandon, Ranveer Brar, and Keith Allen.
