Yash Dayal received a maiden call-up while Shreyas Iyer was still left on the fringes as India announced their squad for the first Test against Bangladesh on September 8, Sunday. Dayal, who was part of India B during the first match of the Duleep Trophy 2024, picked up 4 wickets across 2 innings during the game against India A.
Dayal has played a total of 24 matches in his first-class career and has picked up 76 wickets during this time at an average of 28.89. The left-arm pacer will be part of a pace unit that will be led by Jasprit Bumrah and will also have Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep, who picked up 9 wickets in the first match of the Duleep trophy. Dayal was impressive this year during the IPL 2024 season for RCB as he picked up 15 wickets in 14 matches.
Mohammed Shami, who is recovering from surgery, will be missing the first match, which will start on September 19 in Chennai.
Shreyas Iyer still remains on the fringes
A notable absentee from the squad which was announced on Sunday was Shreyas. The batter was dropped after the Vizag Test against England and would see himself lose the BCCI central contract. Following the IPL, where he led KKR to the title, Shreyas would make his return to the ODI team for the tour of Sri Lanka and was also named as the captain of the India D team during the Duleep Trophy.
Shreyas’ exclusion from the Test squad also comes after Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had admitted that his omission from the central contract list was a misunderstanding and he would be considered for all formats of the game.
Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, who were sensational during the series against England earlier in the year, retain their spot in the squad.
