Jannik Sinner crushes Taylor Fritz in US Open final to make history – MASHAHER

Jannik Sinner proved too strong for Taylor Fritz to win the US Open and his second Grand Slam title of the year by beating his opponent in just over 2 hours and 15 minutes.

He also became the first Italian man to win the US Open in its history – doing so in style by winning 6-3 6-4 7-5.

Even with Taylor Swift present at Flushing Meadows, it was no love story for Fritz – who could not win in front of a home crowd.

An American has not won the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2006 and the wait will continue after Sinner followed up his gruelling victory over Jack Draper with a dominating display on Sunday.

Fritz beat his compatriot Frances Tiafoe to reach the final earlier this week and insisted that the semi-final would be tougher than the final.

But he was made to eat his words after a roaring start from Sinner, who raced into an early lead.

The world No. 1 did not relent, either, punishing any small mistake made by Fritz and using a deadly forehand to keep the pressure firmly on until the end.

The American crowd tried their best to cheer on their man but they stood in rousing applause for Sinner after he defeated Fritz.

In truth, there was not a lot that the 26-year-old did wrong, keeping tabs with the San Candido man for plenty of the contest but losing the point when he most needed it.

And, indeed, in the third set, Fritz raised his game considerably and produced some of the best tennis he has played over the entire competition.

As British legend Tim Henman said on Sky Sports: “Fritz [was] always playing catch-up.

“He needs to put the pressure on and play those types of winners when he is 15-15 or 15-30 on the Sinner serve.

It was a performance worthy of a champion – and ending the Grand Slam season just as he started after his Australian Open victory at the start of the year – 2024 has been dominated by Sinner.

With Novak Djokovic failing to win a Grand Slam title and the possibility theat the 37-year-old could end the year without a Tour-level title for the first time since 2005, could Sinner fill the gap?

There are plenty of young top talents in tennis currently, including Wimbledon conqueror Carlos Alcaraz and Denmark’s Holger Rune.

Not to mention Britain’s Draper, whose performance at the US Open saw the nation sit up and take notice.

But Sinner proved why he is ranked the best in the world – showcasing an arsenal of strengths that make him a formidable force for any player.

The stars turned out for the US Open final including Matthew McConaughey, Jon Hamm and, of course, Taylor Swift, but none shone brighter than Sinner.
