It may be the first week of September, but there was some good contract conversation to be had on this week’s edition of The Hockey Show.
The big deal to discuss was the massive extension Leon Draisaitl signed with the Edmonton Oilers.
The eight-year contract carries an average annual value (AAV) of $14 million, which will be the highest in the NHL.

Edmonton’s other superstar, Connor McDavid, has two years remaining on his current deal which carries a $12.5 million AAV.
McDavid will be getting a raise because he’s the best hockey player in the world and should be paid as such.
If he stays in Edmonton, that means the Oilers will have around $30 million of its annual salary dedicated to two players.
When McDavid signs his next deal, the NHL salary cap will likely be over $90 million, but that’s still around 1/3 of their team salary going to two players, albeit two of the absolute best players on the planet.
Also on the show, Roy brought up a rumor from Spittin’ Chicklets’ Ryan Whitney that the Boston Bruins are lowballing Jeremy Swayman on a new deal.
Considering Boston just traded Linus Ullmark, you’d think they’d be trying to lock up one of the best young goaltenders in the league, not piss him off.
