King Charles’s first long-haul trip as monarch is set to face “very clear adaptations” in a “big contrast” to the same trip undertaken by his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The King and Queen will embark on their first visit to a Commonwealth Realm since ascending the throne, with a trip to Australia and Samoa planned for October.
Buckingham Palace announced the monarch will travel to the region from October 18 to 26, attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) during their visit.
In a statement, a palace spokesperson stated: “In both countries, their Majesty’s engagements will focus on themes designed to celebrate the best of Australia and Samoa, as well as reflecting aspects of the King and Queen’s work.

“The King, who has this year been receiving treatment for cancer, will meet Professor Georgina Long and Professor Richard Scolyer and will hear about the work to help those affected by melanoma.”
Providing further insight into the upcoming trip for the King, GB News Royal Correspondent Cameron Walker highlighted the significant contrast between this tour and Queen Elizabeth II’s first visit to Australia in 1954.
Cameron explained: “The late Queen Elizabeth visited every state of Australia, every territory including seven capital cities and 70 towns in 58 days.
“In contrast, the King is going to be spending, we understand, less than a week in Australia and he’s only going to be visiting Sydney and Canberra.”

Detailing some of the King’s planned engagements, Cameron reflected on the monarch’s current health situation and how the trip will be “adapted” to best suit his needs amid his ongoing cancer treatment.

Cameron told GB News: “As we knew, doctors had given the King the green light to travel. It is going to be the first long-haul travel the King has done since his cancer diagnosis.
“But it’s very clear from the information I’ve received this afternoon that adaptions have been made. For example, New Zealand originally was on the agenda for the King and Queen to travel to – that has now been ruled out on doctor’s advice.”
Acknowledging the long-haul nature of the journey and the need to maintain the monarch’s energy levels, Cameron added: “Time has been factored in for the King to rest between engagements and between travel.
“Of course it’s a long way to go, halfway across the world, in order to keep his energy levels up on that tour.”

Offering more insight into the King and Queen’s itinerary, Cameron revealed that the monarch will be attending a “barbecue” as well as engagements about cancer and melanoma.
Cameron said: “There’s a variety of engagements, including military engagements, sustainability, culture. We understand King Charles is going to be off to a barbecue one day in Australia.
“Because he’s been mindful that he’s undergoing cancer treatments, he’s also going to be spending some time at an engagement to do with melanoma and cancer treatment.”
