ASHEVILLE – A motorcyclist was killed Sept. 9 while riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to a Sept. 10 news statement from the National Park Service.
NPS dispatchers received a call at about 2:30 p.m. Sept. 9 from members of a motorcycle riding group reporting a motor vehicle accident near Milepost 377 on the parkway, which is near Craven Gap and the intersection with Town Mountain Road, five miles north of the U.S. 70 Asheville entrance.
Buncombe County fire personnel arrived on scene to find the motorcycle operator deceased, according to the news release. The operator of the motorcycle was identified as Albertaus Peek, age 67, of Bodegraven, Netherlands.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that Peek was traveling southbound with a group of riders when he failed to navigate a turn, left the lane, and hit a vehicle traveling northbound. The driver of the northbound vehicle sustained minor injuries,” the statement read.
NPS said no other additional details were immediately available.
