Potential tropical cyclone six gains momentum in the Gulf – MASHAHER

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Heavy rain is expected this week as Potential tropical cyclone six gains momentum in the Gulf. As of this morning the National Hurricane Center reports that Six now has sustained winds of 50 mph. The storm is moving to the NNW at 5 mph.

By the end of the day today we are expecting this storm to organize enough to reach tropical storm strength. Landfall somewhere between Galveston Bay and Southern Terrebonne Parish is expected on Wednesday. Storm surge watches should be issued later on today.

Latest models are trending to push this storm a little more eastward. I am leaning more towards a Louisiana, rather than TX landfall. Considerable flash flooding is expected along SE Louisiana coastline through Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.

Impacts for us will include wind speeds capable of producing large numbers of power outages. Have preparations, batteries, etc. on standby. Coastal communities need to prep for storm surge. Winds will be pushing at minimum 2-3 ft. of additional water onshore at the time of landfall. Rainfall totals are expected to reach 5-7 inches by the end of the week, locally higher amounts possible.
