Red Lobster may finally be out of hot water after a federal judge approved the seafood restaurant chain’s plan last week to recover from an “endless shrimp” promotion that missed the mark, massive debt, and an overall decline in customers.
But not before the chain closed 23 more locations, including three in Florida.
So how many are left now?
Who owns Red Lobster now?
Red Lobster will be acquired by RL Investor Holdings LLC, a newly formed entity organized and controlled by Fortress Investment Group LLC, Red Lobster said in a news release. The restaurant chain will join a few other companies that filed for bankruptcy and were bought up by Fortress, including Vice Media and the Alamo Drafthouse (which has since been sold to Sony Pictures Entertainment).
Fortress also controls a company called SPB Hospitality, which owns brands such as Logan’s Roadhouse, Krystal, Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom and Twisted Tenders, spokesperson Gordon Runté said.
Following the court’s approval, Red Lobster, which started in Lakeland, Florida and grew to be the largest seafood chain in the world with more than 700 locations, will continue to operate as an independent company with 544 locations across 44 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces, the company said.
Red Lobster even launched a new campaign this week, offering free food for an entire presidential term (for just one lucky winner, no more “endless” anything for everyone this time).
“We will never do that again in the way it was done,” said new incoming CEO Damola Adamolekun.
While some blamed the chain’s popular “endless shrimp promotion” for bringing the company down to bankruptcy, experts pointed to inflationary prices, lease obligations above market rates, and operational decisions.
How many Red Lobster locations are left in Florida?
Red Lobster closed restaurants in Fort Walton Beach, Pensacola and Port Richey just over a week ago, but there could have been many more. According to one of the documents filed in bankruptcy court before the judge approved the new deal, there were over a dozen more Florida locations on the chopping block.
According to the Red Lobster website and Google listings, these Florida locations escaped the net. Asterisks mark the restaurants we might have lost.
