Toyota Motor announced its development and production processes for next generation batteries, including all solid state batteries, had been certified by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under the Japanese government’s ‘Supply Assurance Plan for Batteries’.
Certification was granted for production of performance batteries at the automaker’s Prime Planet Energy & Solutions and Primearth EV Energy Company subsidiaries as well as its in house R&D and production operations relating to all solid state batteries (ASSB).
Primearth EV Energy will be renamed Toyota Battery from October after the automaker took control of its joint venture with Panasonic Holdings earlier this year.
Toyota said the certification was in line with METI Initiatives to Ensure a Stable Supply of Batteries policy which aims to strengthen Japan’s battery production infrastructure, including battery cells, materials and manufacturing equipment which have been designated as critical materials.
Toyota said the battery industry was an equipment intensive industry requiring large scale investments in significant facilities. To maintain and enhance manufacturing capabilities and technologies within Japan’s battery industry, which includes equipment industries and material manufacturers, government support was being provided.
Toyota aimed to begin production of the next generation of performance EV batteries at its two main subsidies by 2026, followed by ASSB batteries.
