Veteran actress Zeenat Aman recently shared a heartfelt Instagram post reflecting on her collaboration with the late costume designer Bhanu Athaiya. Known for pushing boundaries with her portrayal of Rupa in Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Zeenat recalled how Athaiya played a pivotal role in shaping her unforgettable look in the film.

In her Instagram post, Zeenat Aman described Bhanu Athaiya as “prolific and meticulous,” crediting the Oscar-winning designer with designing her costumes in more than 15 films. Athaiya, who became the first Indian to win an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Gandhi (1982), left an indelible mark on the industry, and her work with Zeenat is often regarded as one of her most memorable collaborations.
Zeenat fondly wrote, “I’ve been blessed by the hand of many a genius in my life. The very best in not just cinema, but also fashion. The formidably talented Bhanu Athaiya designed my costumes for over 15 movies, including Satyam Shivam Sundaram.” The post included a photo of Zeenat in an elegant haute couture outfit.
Crafting the Look for Satyam Shivam Sundaram
Aman highlighted the intricacies of their working relationship, sharing that Bhanu had a mannequin made to her exact measurements to streamline the costume design process. This enabled the designer to work independently without requiring Zeenat to come in for regular fittings. “She would actualise the fantastical ideas that appeared in her mind on this inanimate bust,” Zeenat explained, adding that she only had to visit for occasional trials, a convenient arrangement given her busy schedule.
Sensual and Comfortable: A Rare Balance
One of the standout aspects of Athaiya’s work was her ability to create outfits that were both sensual and comfortable, a combination that Zeenat Aman valued greatly. “No other designer in my life has come close to creating outfits for me that were as comfortable as they were sensual,” she wrote. Athaiya’s designs for Satyam Shivam Sundaram showcased this balance perfectly, contributing to the film’s lasting impact on Indian cinema.
Zeenat’s Personal Style Today
Despite being known for her iconic looks on screen, Zeenat Aman shared that she prefers dressing casually in her everyday life. Although she receives haute couture pieces from friends, she revealed that most of them remain untouched at the bottom of her wardrobe. Even as her professional career continues to evolve, Zeenat’s preference for comfort remains a core part of her style.
Speaking of the professional front, Zeenat Aman will soon be seen in the film Bun Tikki, directed by Faraz Arif Ansari, alongside actors Abhay Deol, Shabana Azmi, and Lin Laishram.
