In recent months, many Bollywood films have made their way back to theatres for re-release, while others are set to do so soon. Filmmaker and producer Sanjay Gupta, who is busy promoting his film Visfot, recently spoke about this trend, pointing to a significant issue facing the industry. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Bollywood Bubble, revealing that the shortage of new material for theatres is driving this re-release trend.

“We are in desperate times now because the theatres have no material,” Gupta stated. “They are trying everything, even the exhibitors are trying everything.”

Re-Releases Aren’t Bringing in Big Numbers

Sanjay Gupta also stated that, despite the increase in re-releases, the results at the box office are minimal. “I don’t think even re-releases of films make a huge difference. The numbers are really negligible and a lot of time has passed,” Gupta said. He explained that for many films being re-released, the current younger audience was too young to watch them when they first premiered, which is why they are “just catching up on that cinema.”

However, Gupta also pointed out a key difference compared to earlier eras, where certain films had long-lasting brand loyalty. “For something like Sholay, we had that. But now, there’s no brand loyalty for most of the re-releases,” he added.

Why Visfot Chose OTT Over a Theatrical Release

During the interview, Gupta was also asked why Visfot—a film he believes is made for the big screen—wasn’t released in theatres. He explained that the decision was based on how the project was developed.

“When Visfot was ready, we watched it, and our first reaction was that it is supposed to be a big-screen film. This deserves to be in the theatres. But it was always considered, conceived, executed, and contracted for direct-to-OTT. So, we never really questioned if it was supposed to be in theatres,” he explained.

Speaking of Visfot, the crime thriller is written by Abbas Dalal and Hussain Dalal and directed by Kookie Gulati. Starring Fardeen Khan and Riteish Deshmukh, it started streaming on JioCinema from September 6.
