COLUMBIA COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – A 20-year-old New York woman was arrested in Wisconsin on Tuesday after allegedly stealing mail from people’s mailboxes.
According to a release, on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office began receiving reports from residents in the towns of Dekorra and Otsego advising that mail had been stolen from their mailboxes.

Through the next few days, the sheriff’s office took over 20 reports of mail being stolen from mailboxes in these areas.
Through victim and witness observations, a suspect vehicle was identified. Detectives began working with other area law enforcement agencies and learned this vehicle was suspected of numerous similar thefts in the northern portion of Dane County.
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, with the assistance of the La Crosse Police Department, detectives arrested Rachel Russell, 20, of Van Etten, New York, in La Crosse.
Russell was transported to the Columbia County Jail and is awaiting an initial appearance in Columbia County Circuit Court on numerous charges related to the mail thefts in Columbia County.
This investigation is ongoing, and additional charges and arrests are possible.

Additionally, the release says that a large quantity of mail has been recovered, and detectives have identified several victims who may not be aware that their mail was stolen. Detectives will contact those victims in the near future.
