Netflix has released the trailer for its literary romance drama “Lonely Planet,” featuring an old-school-new-school paring of Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth.
According to the official logline, the film follows a novelist named Katherine (Dern), who in search of inspiration, books a trip to a writer’s retreat in Morocco. There, she meets “a young man (Hemsworth) whose acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.”
Supporting cast members include Diana Silvers (“Space Force”), Ben Youcef (“Afraid”), Bellina Logan (“Palm Royale”), Gustav Dyekjær Giese (“The Quiet Ones”) and Dillon Lane (“The Guilty”).
While discussing the film with Netflix’s publication Tudum, Dern said what attracted her to “Lonely Planet” was “the exploration of identity and self-worth within relationships, especially in a world as intellectually charged as the literary scene.”
“The dynamic between the younger man and the older, established writer intrigued me because it’s not just about romance — it’s about finding someone who truly sees and understands you, which is something deeply human and relatable,” Dern continued.
Speaking about her co-star Hemsworth, Dern added, “He became not only a buddy and a confidant through our Moroccan adventure, but our shared longing [for] honesty and intimacy in all relationships was very moving to me. We were very aligned, so getting to tell this story together meant the world … and he is friggin’ hilarious, so I laughed the entire time.”
Susannah Grant serves as writer, director and producer for “Lonely Planet.” Producers include Sarah Timberman and Liza Chasin. Karim Debbagh was the line producer in Morocco.
“Lonely Planet” comes to Netflix Oct. 11. Watch the trailer below.
