QuickCheck: Does a viral video showing ‘survey-taking ministry officials’ depict a recent incident? – MASHAHER

WHEN it comes to viral videos, it’s often difficult to tell if the contents are fresh or recycled.

Recently, a TikTok video had gone viral showing two officers claiming to be from the Home Ministry visiting homes to conduct census preparations. Is this true?

Verdict:

FALSE

The Home Ministry in a statement on its respective social media platforms has dismissed the video of the individuals claiming to be officers from the ministry.

“The Home Ministry would like to deny that the individual in the video is an official from the ministry or any of its departments or agencies.

“The activity of the individuals is an irresponsible and malicious act and is a form of organised crime with a modus operandi to deceive the rural community,” it said.

The ministry also said that the warning of a robbery involving two individuals is an old video that has been recirculated.

It further advised the public to practise caution and if such activities are found to be taking place, the public has been advised to not be influenced by it and immediately lodge a police report.

Social media users are advised to always be ethical and responsible when using social media by ensuring the validity of any message or news before sharing it with other users, while always complying with the Communications and Multimedia Act.
