Actor Siddhant Chaturvedi has addressed rumors about his departure from the Karan Johar-backed epic fantasy film Brahmastra. He clarified that he did not leave the project, as he was relatively unknown when Ayan Mukerji offered him the role. Siddhant expressed his enthusiasm for the film but noted that his father was concerned about how he would stand out among the prominent cast, which included Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, and Alia Bhatt.
Siddhant Chaturvedi reveals he turned down Brahmastra role due to father’s advice: “I could have done it as well, but my father wouldn’t have let me”
In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Siddhant explained that he did not “leave” the film. At that early stage in his career, he was an aspiring actor and felt he could not turn down an opportunity with Ayan Mukerji, Dharma Productions, and Brahmastra.
The actor claimed that when he was invited to portray a superhero in the film, Ranbir, Alia, and Amitabh Bachchan were already on board. “They were still writing the script, and I was excited. I could have done it as well, but my father wouldn’t have let me. ‘You are better than this,’ he says, even till today he pushes me. I was elated that I will be getting a three-film contract with Dharma. I met Ayan, who showed me his vision of Brahmastra. I had only done a handful of ads by then, so I was a nobody. I told my father the film has Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan and he asked me, ‘Toh tujhe kaun dekhega (so, who will notice you)?’”
The actor stated that his father’s concern made him think, and he could only stammer that he will perform action, “shoot arrows and stuff” in the film. However, his father was unimpressed because Siddhant did not have the whole script, which was still being written at the time of the offer.
The actor added, “He said, ‘Nahi beta, I don’t think you should do it. Do you have the script, have you auditioned for it? If you don’t even know what you are going to do in that film, don’t sell your destiny.’ Even Gully Boy had Ranveer Kapoor and Alia, but after the audition, Zoya told me she will send me the script and I was shocked, because, again, I was a nobody. She casually said if I like the script, she would love to have me on board. I narrated the entire script to my father and despite the film had Ranveer and Ali, he noted two crucial scenes of mine–my entry and when I lose–and said these sequences will make me.”
Siddhant, who gained prominence with Gully Boy, revealed that even during his struggling days, he was determined to pursue only leading roles and was unwilling to accept “side characters.” He noted that this firm stance came with consequences, as he faced being “blacklisted” by some people in the industry.
He added, “The problem wasn’t that I had no offers, but I knew I only wanted to be a hero, to do leading parts. I will act, I have worked hard on my craft, but I wanted to create a big splash. I had gotten shortlisted for a lot films, which I turned down saying I don’t think this can do justice to what I think I will be. I was blacklisted, because people thought, ‘Who this person is saying no?’; I refused to play side characters, because I knew my potential was a lot. I didn’t want to short-sell myself.”
