The Perfect Couple features one of the most unexpected and lighthearted opening sequences. In this Netflix murder mystery series, the cast—including Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Dakota Fanning, and Ishaan Khatter—are seen dancing to Meghan Trainor’s unreleased track ‘Criminals’. Ishaan stood out as a skilled dancer while the others kept pace with him. However, Ishaan exclusively told News18 Showsha that the inclusion of this song in the opening credits wasn’t part of the original plan.

In the conversation, the Bollywood actor explained that the song was introduced to the cast on the final day of filming, which initially caused some hesitation. Despite this, they gave it their all in the dance sequence. Ishaan also mentioned that long after shooting concluded, the showrunners revealed that the song was added specifically because of him. They had seen his dance videos and wanted to incorporate his talent into the series.
“It was fun. I didn’t take it any more seriously than that. Yeah, I was a bit shocked when I was listening to it. I was like, ‘Is this a joke on us or is this for real?’ If I can say this later apparently, they put that sequence because of me, because they saw my dance. This is what I was told by the showrunners. So, you know… You’re welcome,” he said with a big laugh.
He added, “We all went in with hesitation because it didn’t make any sense to us in the scheme of things, it was the last thing we shot in the show. It was Susanne’s idea, and it was a brilliant idea because, also keeping it as an opening credits, nobody knew it would be the opening credits of the show. No one imagined it. I think it works only it offsets the tone of the show in such an unpredictable way. The only feedback I have received from the audience is that it’s the most unskippable intro of all time (laughs). So, it’s great.”
His co-star, Eve Hewson, had already painted a similar picture. She stated that the cast was taken aback, with some even having a ‘meltdown’ when they discovered the truth. She noted that many people called their agents, but everything eventually fell into place.
Ishaan also mentioned that he had a great time with the cast throughout the four-month shoot. He said, “We had a lot of fun together and I think one of the things that kept us sane was being able to hang out and spend time with each other. There was not much to do on the Cape and we all had many days, that were whole days, where we were not working. Because it is an ensemble cast so somebody would be called in. But there were lots of days where we would all work but there were days where we would all hang out outside.”
Ishaan recalled, “One of the things we really enjoyed doing was, we did a trip to Province Town, which was an hour’s drive and we would go whale watching and we saw drag show on the same day, we got lobster roles, we had a lot of fun. We got into weird local activities like axe throwing and some strange things like that (laughs). There was like one bar and restaurant and that’s where we would hang out. It was good times. We would pool and whatnot. We did everything that there was there to do.”
