Australian Oscar Piastri put on a masterclass of Formula 1 driving in Baku on Sunday to claim victory in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver, starting from second on the grid behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, took the lead early in the race and never looked back.
He stubbornly defended a narrow lead of between half a second and a second for almost the entirety of the race, demonstrating a level of maturity beyond his 23 years. Only in the final few laps – with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez chasing down Leclerc – did Piastri’s lead blow out.
The win takes his grand prix tally to two after his victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier in the season.
