NEW DELHI: A local court in Kolkata on Sunday remanded former RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal to CBI custody until September 17.
The central agency had produced both individuals before the court in connection to the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run hospital.
“We have got their custody for three days till September 17.Now, both will be questioned together. The duo has played vital roles in the RG Kar case,” a CBI officer informed PTI.

The CBI arrested Ghosh and Mondal on Saturday for their alleged involvement in the destruction of evidence in the Kolkata rape-murder case. This development occurred shortly after protesting doctors returned from a meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee without reaching a resolution, prolonging the impasse.
The Calcutta high court had ordered a CBI investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor on the hospital grounds. The court has set a deadline of September 17 for the CBI to submit a progress report on the case.
During questioning by CBI officers on Saturday, Mondal failed to provide satisfactory answers, leading to his arrest. The CBI claimed in court that there could be a larger conspiracy at play and that both Ghosh and Mondal had played crucial roles in the crime. The two were in communication with each other, and Ghosh allegedly instructed Mondal on how to proceed with the rape-murder case.
Despite being informed about the doctor’s death around 10 am on August 9, the FIR was only lodged around 11 pm. The CBI accused both individuals of attempting to downplay the incident and shield the heinous crime. The central probe agency argued that the police should have treated the case as a suo motu case from the beginning, given the nature of the crime.
Ghosh was previously arrested by the CBI in a separate investigation into financial irregularities and is currently in judicial custody until September 23.

Ghosh is being held in solitary confinement at Presidency Central Jail following a special court’s order remanding him until September over alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Hospital. The CBI alleges that Ghosh embezzled funds and made 84 illegal appointments between 2022 and 2023.
To date, three persons have been arrested in connection with the rape-murder case. The body of the postgraduate trainee was discovered in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital on August 9.
