A Des Moines man was arrested and charged Monday for allegedly killing a man who police said intervened in a fight.
Des Moines police and the Des Moines Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash into a retaining wall at 5:29 a.m. Sunday at Second and University avenues. Responding personnel found a 24-year-old man, who police have not publicly identified, with a gunshot injury.
A preliminary investigation found that the injured man attempted to drive away from the scene when he crashed, Parizek said. Medics transported him to a local hospital, where he died.

Kyonta Lavon Taylor, 25, was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter and felon in possession of a firearm.
Evidence, including security surveillance video, showed that several people were in a Amoco gas station parking lot at 1443 Second Ave. for an after hours gathering on Sunday morning, Parizek said. Several arguments broke out at the gathering.
The victim was seen intervening in one of the arguments after it escalated into a physical fight.
The victim had struck Taylor and knocked him to the ground, Parizek said. Evidence showed Taylor responded by pulling out a gun and shooting the victim.
Taylor was booked in the Polk County Jail around 5 p.m. Monday. No bond is listed.
The shooting is still under investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available.
The shooting was the second in Des Moines on Sunday. Two people died in an unrelated argument near Court Avenue and Water Street earlier that morning.
On Monday, two police officers were injured and a suspect killed after a police chase. The suspect fired at the officers, one of whom was shot in the head. Both are expected to survive.
