New Kings Defender Will Provide Important Element – MASHAHER

Los Angeles Kings GM Rob Blake made a very under-the-radar move this off-season that may have a big impact on their roster in the 2024-25 season.

No, it wasn’t a trade; it was the signing of veteran defenseman Joel Edmundson.

The rugged blue liner will provide a very important element to the team this season: physicality.

He plays the game hard and, unlike most, plays better when the pressure is on.

“This season, when I was in Toronto, we played Boston in Game 7, and I thought I was the most calm I’ve ever been in a situation like that, so that experience definitely helps. I think when the young guys can look up to you and see that you’re still joking around, having a good time, kind of keeping things light in serious moments, that’s when everyone elevates their game and plays their best, when they’re relaxed.”

Edmundson spoke about what he brings to the Kings’ blue line.

“I do the dirty work.”

Edmundson will be impactful to the younger players like Brandt Clarke and Jordan Spence. His style of game as a stay-at-home defence will allow them to play a bit more freely and join the rush more often.

Blake’s wishlist for the summer was to find someone who was “strong and heavy” to partner with one of the two younger defenders. He now has that in Edmundson and Vladislav Gavrikov.

The two biggest signings that the Kings made this off-season aren’t the biggest names, but the players with the most heart. Edmundson and Warren Foegele will quickly become fan favourites and the most relied upon players from the coaching staff.
