(FOX40.COM) — Arsonists set fire to a hillside covered in dry grass below the towering deck of California’s tallest bridge on Saturday afternoon, according to CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit.
Hikers spotted flames racing along the canyon walls of the North Fork of the American River in the Auburn State Recreation Area and contacted first responders.

Units with CAL FIRE NEU and the Foresthill Fire Protection District responded to the fire, along with aerial resources from CAL FIRE.
Within minutes, fire crews halted the forward progress of the fire and CAL FIRE mapped the total acres burned at four acres.
When the flames were initially seen in the canyon, two people were reportedly fleeing from the area towards a parking lot in the state recreation area.
CAL FIRE believes that these two people are responsible for starting the fire and are asking for anyone with information about the two subjects to contact CAL FIRE Law Enforcement at 530-889-0111 ext. 1022.
