Brisbane news LIVE updates: Stink over composting facility – MASHAHER

A court ruling has forced an Ipswich composting facility to overhaul its operations to reduce its odours in a three-stage process.

More than 8000 odour complaints were made last year from people in the areas surrounding composting company NuGrow’s Swanbank Industrial Park site. However, the area is home to several odour-causing industries, including two other compost businesses.

NuGrow was ordered to implement its stage-one and stage-two interim measures – to provide immediate relief for residents – within a month of Wednesday’s ruling.

It was given 12 months to implement permanent stage-three measures in compliance with stronger regulations introduced by the Department of Environment, Science, and Innovation (DESI) last month.

DESI executive director of south-east compliance Brad Wirth said stronger regulations gave the department “extra ammunition” to secure the order against NuGrow.

“This is good progress, but we aren’t done yet, and we will continue to pursue opportunities to improve the Ipswich community’s experience with local waste operators,” he said.

The department also organised a community drop-in session from 5.30pm to 6.30pm today at Minka Place, Ripley, to discuss any questions residents may have.
