Kongsberg boosts US defense capabilities with missile site in Virginia – MASHAHER

Norwegian Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace has announced plans to open a new missile production facility in James City County, Virginia, US.

Kongsberg will invest around $71m for the new 14,000sqm facility and an additional $30m in other costs, including engineering and software. This investment will reportedly create around 180 new job opportunities.

Located near key US Navy facilities, the new site will assemble, upgrade and repair Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) and Joint Strike Missiles (JSM).

The company noted that the decision to situate this facility in the US was “heavily influenced” by the possibility that the Department of Defense could award a multiyear procurement contract to Kongsberg.

Eirik Lie, president of Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace said, “The US Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force are important customers for Kongsberg’s NSM and JSM. Their demand signals gave us the predictability we needed to invest in the United States.”

He added that the new site will allow them to “better serve allies in the US and continue to expand that supply chain locally, building capacity and redundancy for these critical capabilities.”

This adds to the company’s recent investments in the US. This week, it announced a $10m expansion plan for its facility in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. In the last few months, Kongsberg also announced new missile factories in Australia – Adelaide and Newcastle.
