Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na remains a beloved Bollywood romantic comedy, featuring Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza. Despite the continued love for the film, the idea of a sequel was firmly dismissed by the film’s producer, Aamir Khan, according to director Abbas Tyrewala.
Abbas Tyrewala reveals Aamir Khan REJECTED Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na sequel’s idea: “He said this is the stupidest thing”
Abbas Tyrewala’s Pitch for the Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na Sequel
In a recent interview with Cyrus, Abbas Tyrewala opened up about his discussions with Aamir Khan regarding a potential sequel to the 2008 hit film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Tyrewala recalled pitching an unconventional storyline to Aamir shortly after the film’s release. “I don’t know if I am allowed to say this. Mr. Aamir Khan is rather sensitive about what should be spoken of and what not,” Tyrewala said, before revealing the concept he had in mind.
In Tyrewala’s version of the sequel, Jay and Aditi, the main characters played by Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza, would be living separately, having drifted apart. He imagined Jay having an affair with his former girlfriend Meghna, portrayed by Manjari Fadnis, which would set the stage for the story. However, this idea was immediately rejected by Aamir Khan.
Aamir Khan’s Strong Reaction
Abbas Tyrewala humorously recounted Aamir’s sharp response to his sequel idea. “I took it to Khan saab and I told him that the film starts with Jay and Aditi living separately. They are separated and Jay has an affair with Meghna. Aamir said, ‘I don’t care who makes the sequel to Jaane Tu, it will never be you’. He said this is the ‘stupidest thing,’” Tyrewala recalled with a laugh.
Aamir Khan, known for his perfectionist approach, felt strongly that this storyline did not align with the essence of the original film. Tyrewala further elaborated that, in his mind, this narrative reflected the complexities of real life, where romantic relationships often face challenges. He envisioned a more mature sequel dealing with Jay and Aditi’s relationship struggles and their eventual resolution.
Why the Sequel Didn’t Happen
Tyrewala explained his rationale behind the sequel’s storyline: “I said that’s how life occurs. After all that romance, what will happen is that they will get sick of each other, they would want to get divorced, he will be drunk somewhere, he will meet Meghna, and he will end up…” Despite Tyrewala’s belief that this storyline would make for a compelling and realistic film, Aamir Khan was unconvinced.
Tyrewala concluded, recalling Aamir’s final words on the matter: “Aamir said, ‘Never refer to this movie again. Thank God you directed just one, never refer to it again.’”
The Legacy of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
While fans of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na may be disappointed to learn that a sequel is unlikely, the original film continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences. Released in 2008, the film marked the directorial debut of Abbas Tyrewala and was produced by Aamir Khan under his banner Aamir Khan Productions. It became a defining romantic comedy of its time, with its youthful charm and memorable performances by Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza.
