Chris Scott says Geelong will need to shut down Brisbane’s midfield and challenge the Lions’ defence if the Cats are to advance to their second grand final in three years.

The two-time premiership coach said he was feeling the nerves heading into Saturday’s preliminary final at the MCG as much as he did when he first started at Geelong.

“Even when they were down last week, the fact that they can score so quickly is always a threat,” Scott told Fox Footy.

“They’ve got dangerous players ahead of the ball, so we’ve got to make sure that they don’t get too good of a look. I know this is a cliche, but it does come back to their midfield.

“If they get too much ball on the outside and deliver it well to their forwards, it’ll be tougher for us. And you know, the other way, we’ve got to challenge them defensively as well.

“They’ve got some really good offensive players, and if we get sort of tied up too much in defending them and forgetting to make them defend themselves, the game will be on their terms.”

Scott said the Cats would look to shut down the Lions’ chief playmaker Lachie Neale.

“Oh, yeah, we always do,” Scott said. “I don’t think he’s played a game of AFL footy where he hasn’t had someone paying attention to him.

“It’s just a matter of how defensive you get because sometimes, and I think Dangerfield is a bit similar with us, that if you, if you pay too much attention to him, you might take away too much from your own game.”
