The much-loved entertainer, Biwi No 1 (1999), starring Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Anil Kapoor and Tabu, completed 25 years on May 28. The film was a super-hit, thanks to its plot, a message that appealed to families and ladies, performances, catchy music and also because producer Vashu Bhagnani took the risk of releasing the David Dhawan directorial during the ICC Cricket World Cup 1999. The risk paid off. It was the second-biggest opener of the year and also the second-biggest grosser of 1999, surpassing films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Sarfarosh, etc. In this special feature, we shall bring some fascinating and unknown trivia about this multi-starrer which was published in the various issues of Komal Nahta’s Film Information magazine in 1999.
25 Years of Biwi No 1 trivia: The Salman Khan-starrer had a ‘Shahrukh’ connection; Anil Kapoor didn’t let the makers change climax; makers adopted a ‘Buy Biwi No 1 saree and get free entry’ scheme
1. As per an article in the magazine, the CI distributor of Biwi No 1took out a vibrant procession that paraded through the bustling streets of Indore on the day of the movie’s release. The procession, characterized by its lively ambience, featured a procession accompanied by a spirited band. It caught the attention and generated anticipation among the locals for the film. The band also played outside a theatre screening Biwi No 1.
And that’s not all. Specially crafted Biwi No 1 sarees were introduced into the local market, offering a distinctive way for fans to express their support for the film. To incentivize the purchase and wearing of these special sarees, a captivating offer was introduced: women adorned in the Biwi No. 1 sarees were granted free entry to the cinema screening the film!
2. The character of Tabu was adorable in the film. She was called Lovely and this was the name suggested by the actress herself. Director David Dhawan and producer Vashu Bhagnani realized that the name suited perfectly and hence, accepted her suggestion.
3. The character of Piloo, the son of Lovely (Tabu) and Dr Lakhan (Anil Kapoor) raised laughs, especially in the scene where he insists on switching the TV on to get sound sleep. Komal Nahta revealed in an issue of Film Information Magazine that the role was played by the son of Vashu Bhagnani’s sister. Interestingly, his name, as per the film’s credits, is Master Shahrukh!
4. Biwi No 1ends on a hilarious note. However, at one point, the makers had decided to shoot the scene in a milder way without making Anil Kapoor, Tabu and Master Shahrukh play to the gallery. Anil Kapoor, however, put his foot down. He said that the original film Sathi Leelavathi (1995) also had the same finale. The article further said, “Anil is said to have convinced the makers to stick to the original and even told them, he would not have agreed to do the role if he had known that the climax would be diluted.”
The makers realized the evergreen actor had a point and agreed to not make any changes.
