Veteran singer Asha Bhosle voiced her worries about the increasing divorce rates among young people. In a conversation with spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, she questioned why so many young couples seem to fall out of love and grow bored with one another so quickly.
Asha Bhosle raises concerns over rising divorce rates: “I hear about couples sending divorce papers every month”
Reflecting on her own experience, the 91-year-old singer shared that when she faced issues with her husband, RD Burman, her typical response was to spend a few days at her mother’s house after getting upset. However, the idea of divorce never occurred to her. “I never divorced my husband,” she stated.
Asha Bhosle asked Ravi Shankar, “However, nowadays, I hear about couples sending divorce papers every month. Why is this happening, Gurudev?” He replied, “You kept singing and made everyone happy. You also had faith in God and the strength to tolerate and deal with troubles.” He added that today, people’s tolerance levels have diminished significantly.
Asha stated, “I have spent most of my years in the film industry and seen many people, but earlier, they never used to take such drastic steps like the current generation does. I feel that the love between them ends very soon, and they get bored with each other quickly too. Maybe that’s one of the main reasons for the apparent increase in divorces.” Shankar agreed with her, adding that attraction is more important than love in today’s world.
Asha Bhosle did, in fact, divorced her first husband, Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was Lata Mangeshkar’s secretary, in 1960. She had married him at the age of 16, despite her family’s objections. Later, in 1980, she married music composer and singer RD Burman, remaining with him until his passing in 1994.
In her discussion with Ravi Shankar, Asha also shared her views on a woman’s right to choose not to continue a pregnancy if she so desires.
She said, “Nowadays, women think childbearing is a burden. It’s perhaps a reality in the lower strata of society, but even in the middle and higher classes. I started working as a playback singer at the age of 10. During this time, I had three children, raised them, married them off, and now have grandchildren. I executed all the responsibilities successfully and single-handedly, without my husband. I did all this when I was a busy professional, working day and night. Yet, I looked after my children and their studies.”
Ravi Shankar described her as an “ideal” role model for contemporary women.
Throughout her career, Asha Bhosle has recorded over 12,000 songs, ranging from lively tracks like ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’ and ‘O Haseena Zulfon Wali’ to heartfelt ghazals such as ‘Dil Cheez Kya Hai’ and the classical piece ‘Tora Man Darpan Kehlaye’.
