Local EMAs monitoring Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 – MASHAHER

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Local emergency management agencies are actively monitoring Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 (PTC9) as it approaches the U.S.

Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and Candler County EMA have entered Operating Condition (OPCON) 4, the Monitoring Phase ahead of Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine (PTC9). Bryan County’s EMA is also monitoring the storm system.

Candler County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said that OPCON 4 means that they are in enhanced monitoring mode due to the potential for an emergency or disaster. This stage signals the possibility of a partial or full activation of the EOC if necessary.

They also said that it’s important to remember that OPCON levels help to prepare and mobilize resources as needed.

Possible major hurricane may hit Florida this week, NHC says

Current forecasts models have PTC9 entering into the Gulf of Mexico and rapidly intensifying into a Hurricane, CEMA said. Although the tropical system has not officially formed yet, it is anticipated, and advanced modeling suggests potential impacts to our area, the CCSO said.

All residents are encouraged to monitor this storm as it develops over the next several days.

As a reminder, during hurricane season, it is a good time to review personal emergency plans and replenish or create an emergency kit. CEMA recommends that as a common practice, individuals, families and businesses review general storm preparation activities:

  • Monitor local authorities for advice and protective actions.

  • Prepare or inspect your emergency supply kit, and do not forget your pet’s kit too.

  • Document important belongings and consider taking pictures or video of your home.

  • Inspect your property for loose, lightweight items that could become airborne.

Follow CEMA for updates on social media, visit their website, and sign up for CEMA Alerts or text CEMA to 77295 to receive up-to-date information as it becomes available.

For Candler County updates, it is recommended to follow the Candler County Sheriff’s Office.

For residents in Bryan County, EMA will share updates on its website and social media.
