The romantic entertainer Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet (1999) completed 25 years on May 7. It starred Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Neha Bajpai (now called Shabana Raza), Mayuri Kango and Ketki Dave. Produced by Gadar director Anil Sharma, it was a semi-hit at the box office. Interestingly, except Ajay, all the rest of the principal actors in the film were changed, that too, after they were signed. This amusing trivia was shared by Komal Nahta’s Film Information magazine dated May 22, 1999.
Mamta Kulkarni, Shilpa Shetty walked out; Renuka Shahane refused to play Arshad Warsi’s bua: Unravelling the behind-the-scenes drama of Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet
According to Komal Nahta, the film originally starred Ajay Devgn who was paired opposite Mamta Kulkarni and Ayub Khan who was paired opposite Ayesha Jhulka. Mamta Kulkarni, however, refused to attend the shooting schedule. Hence, the makers replaced her with Shilpa Shetty.
While this replacement was taking place, the makers shot 8 reels of footage with Ajay Devgn, Ayub Khan and Ayesha Jhulka. Due to reasons not specified, even Shilpa Shetty had to drop from the film and Neha came in her place. Meanwhile, Ayub Khan and Ayesha Jhulka also bowed out of the film and were replaced by Arshad Warsi and Mayuri Kango.
The problem didn’t end here. Renuka Shahane was also a part of the film’s cast and was to play the bua (paternal aunt) to Ayub Khan. But when Ayub was replaced with Arshad, she suddenly realized that she looked too young to play Arshad’s aunt! Hence, she stepped out of the cast and was replaced with Kekti Dave.
Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet is the story of two brothers trying to fulfil their father’s dying wish. The father, before breathing his last, expresses the desire that his sons should marry the daughters of the man who humiliated and killed him. How the two sons grow up and go to insane lengths to fulfil their father’s wish forms the rest of the film. It was directed by P Vasu.
