A Change.org petition circulating on social media is calling for the reinstatement of three Maine-Endwell High School cheerleading coaches who resigned from their positions.
The coaches resigned from their positions, according to the petition, due to an “untenable situation that resulted from insufficient support from both the administration and athletic department.”
As of 5 p.m. Thursday, 704 people had signed the petition, which asked the district to reinstate the coaches, as well as establish “clear lines of communication,” have a dialogue with the program’s stakeholders and provide the coaches with resources “to ensure a positive and safe environment.”

In a statement Thursday, Maine-Endwell School District Superintendent Jason Van Fossen said while the district does not comment on personnel matters, they “thoroughly investigate any concerns” brought to their attention.
“While we share the community’s concerns, the safety of our students is always our priority,” Van Fossen said. “These coaches resigned voluntarily and were not terminated by the district. We are currently in the process of hiring new coaches so that our team can continue their season.”
