KOTA KINABALU: An education trust fund has been set up in Sabah’s rural Sugut district to help children from underprivileged families further their studies.

Sugut assemblyman Datuk James Ratib (pic) said this trust fund, which would start with a RM100,000 fund in 2025, could help villagers ease their burdens in sending their children to private or public higher learning institutions.

He said most of the villagers in Sugut were not from well-off families and many had trouble coming up with down payments to send their children who wish to go for tertiary education.

“I hope with this trust fund, we will be able to help more parents who have financial difficulties, especially members of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS),” he said after officiating the PGRS annual general meeting for Sugut on Saturday (Sept 28).

Ratib said a committee tasked to handle matters pertaining to this fund has been appointed, hoping that they would carry out their duties with fairness and dedication.

At the PGRS annual general meeting for Sugut, he reminded members to stay united and loyal to the party leadership under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He also called upon members and leaders to step up in serving the community, stating that the party does not need quantity in terms of membership, but quality.

Ratib said leaders must be able to work with their members and grassroots supporters, more so with the state election scheduled anytime by next year.

Sugut is located some 300km from the state capital, where many of its villages still lack basic infrastructure such as stable power supply and clean treated water sources.
