The Mets closed out the regular season with a 3-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Truist Park.
Here are some takeaways…
– Having already clinched their spot in the playoffs in Game 1, the Mets called up Joey Lucchesi to eat innings during the nightcap and he did his job. The southpaw threw 111 pitches across six strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits while walking four and striking out five. Even after putting together a rough season down in Triple-A, Lucchesi came up and provided the Mets with the exact effort they needed.
– After recording just one out in the first game, Huascar Brazoban was the first man out of the Mets’ bullpen in the nightcap. The right-hander allowed Atlanta to break things open in the seventh as he allowed two runs (one earned) in his lone inning of work.
– Tyrone Taylor continues providing the Mets with tremendous play on both sides of the ball. He helped Brazoban escape the seventh without further damage by making a perfect throw to gun down Matt Olson trying to stretch a single into a double.
– With some of their starters sitting, New York’s offense wasn’t able to get much going against Grant Holmes and the Braves’ bullpen, as they were held to just a walk and two hits in their shutout loss.
– By playing in Game 2, Pete Alonso joined Felix Milan as the only two players in franchise history to appear in every game of a 162-game season. The impending free agent finishes a bit of a disappointing potential final regular season with the Mets with 34 homers, 88 RBI, and a .790 OPS.
– The Mets finished the regular season 89-72, and they’ll now head back to Milwaukee to face the Brewers, while the Braves will go head-to-head with the San Diego Padres in the first round.
Game MVP: Marcell Ozuna
The Mets did well to keep Ozuna in check during Game 1, but he did some damage in Game 2, as his two-run single in the seventh helped extend the Braves’ lead.
