Following its price increase earlier this month, indie streamer Nebula is launching a new initiative to up its subscriber count.
Beginning Tuesday, current Nebula customers be given one “guest pass” per month for monthly subscribers, or three per quarter for annual and lifetime accounts, that they can offer to anyone for a week-long free trial of Nebula, as long as that person is new to Nebula. The recipient of the guest pass will be able to sign up without payment info, download the Nebula app and watch content at no cost for seven days.
While some Nebula videos, those marked with a “black timebox,” can be viewed for free without a subscription, much of the streamer’s content is now exclusive or early access and is fully paywalled. The streamer is best known for programming, including its popular travel competition series “Jet Lag: The Game” and a large library of edutainment content but has been growing its slate exponentially over the past year.
Recently, the company launched a film studio as part of its larger focus on scripted content and released new series “Dracula’s Ex-Girlfriend” (pictured above) starring “House of the Dragon” actor Abigail Thorn.
Currently reporting a subscriber count of more than 500,000, Nebula increased its price by $1 in September to $6 per month and $60 annually for new subscribers.
The streamer likens the new guest-pass promo to “invite-only free trials” and aims to convert those guest pass users to subscribers through the marketing campaign. If the initiative proves “popular,” Nebula will “explore ways to better understand when and to whom we should issue more” passes.
“Our creators have been hard at work cooking up things worth sharing,” Nebula CEO Dave Wiskus said in a statement to Variety. “We want to make them easier to share.”
