A Conway parent is suing Horry County Schools after their middle school student was slashed in the face with a razor blade by another student, according to the lawsuit.
Jamie Holmes filed the suit on behalf of the student, who was 13 years old at the time and attended Whittemore Park Middle School, located at 500 El Bethel Road in Conway. The incident happened on Jan. 2, 2023.
Horry County Schools “doesn’t comment on matters related to pending litigation,” according to an email from spokesperson Lisa Bourcier.
The suit, filed on Sept. 27, 2024, said that the student, identified as L.M., was under the care and custody of school employees when she was assaulted by another student in the lunch room. L.M. sustained a cut to her face from the razor blade, the suit said.
Horry County Schools district employees had a duty to L.M. “to make sure that she was kept safe at all times and to keep weapons from getting into the school,” the suit said.
The suit said that “no explanation has been given” as to how the other student could get a razor blade into the school or “what precautions were implemented to keep weapons out of the school.”
The school failed to have security and provide safety measures, including having the appropriate number of teacher aides in the lunch room where L.M. was injured, the suit said.
L.M. required medical treatment for the laceration on her face and will continue to require treatment, the suit said.
The suit is asking for a jury trial for costs and damages.
