Celebrating its anniversary, the film was re-released in 100 cinemas across India on September 27. Subhash Ghai recalls transforming his inner personality for Taal as Anil Kapoor-Aishwarya Rai starrer re-releases: “Not an easy film for me as it looks now”
Subhash Ghai’s Reflection on Taal
On the occasion of Taal’s re-release, Subhash Ghai took to social media to share his reflections on the making of the film. Along with a behind-the-scenes photo from the set, featuring Aishwarya Rai, Akshaye Khanna, and crew members, he penned a heartfelt note. Ghai wrote, “TAAL WAS NOT AN EASY FILM FOR ME AS IT LOOKS NOW. I had to transform my inner personality as a writer-director to enter into a divine and spiritual mood of human side. No crime – no villain – no police – no melodrama … just a soothing musical.”
His words highlight the creative and emotional journey he undertook in creating the film, which was distinct for its focus on music, love, and human emotions. Ghai also expressed his pride and gratitude, adding, “Today I’m proud of it when audiences are still loving it on the big screen to mark its 25th anniversary. Thank you all.”
Special Screening and Industry Reunion
Along with the theatrical re-release, a special screening of Taal was held, which saw attendance from key figures from the original film, including Subhash Ghai, Anil Kapoor, A R Rahman, Ramesh Taurani, and others. During the event, Ghai shared anecdotes from the making of Taal, particularly his concern over the large budget that was provided by the production house, Tips. He humorously recalled, “The next day, I rushed to Laxmikant ji’s place and told him, ‘Zulm ho gaya hai’! They gave me a huge amount, and I was worried that they’d think I was a fraud if the movie didn’t perform.”
Ghai’s light-hearted story turned serious as he praised the genius of A R Rahman, whose music for Taal became one of the film’s most memorable elements. While joking about Rahman’s minimal fee for the project, Ghai emphasized, “But everything is not about money. We are celebrating Taal’s 25 years. Money can never buy this!” Rahman, too, humbly responded, and the audience erupted into applause.
