Held on October 3rd at the Taj Lands End in Mumbai, among the highlights is a panel discussion was filmmaker Siddharth Anand who spoke about blockbusters, rom-coms and mounting big-scale projects. Anand, whose latest project, Fighter, has sparked considerable debate. The film, featuring actors Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, aimed to carve a niche within a genre that remains largely unexplored in Indian cinema. However, upon its release, it faced criticism for not meeting the high expectations set by its star-studded ensemble.

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Anand shared his perspective on the film’s performance. He acknowledged the unique challenges it presents to viewers, emphasizing that much of the Indian audience is not familiar with the aviation experience. “Fighter represents a significant leap for filmmakers in our country,” he remarked. “The genre we are venturing into is largely uncharted, offering no reference points for the audience.”
Anand elaborated on the difficulties in conveying the film’s themes, explaining, “When viewers see a film with such prominent stars and a commercial director, they may find themselves puzzled. They might think, ‘What are these planes doing?’ I am aware that for a substantial portion of our population—about 90%—flying is a new experience. Many have never been to an airport, so their understanding of aerial narratives is limited.”
However, it sparked a meme-fest on social media. Speaking about the same at the Bollywood Hungama OTT India Fest 2024 panel, Siddharth clarified, “I obviously did not mean that. It’s just free minds who love making memes. It was taken completely out of context. What I actually felt was that when I see a film like that, I don’t know what is exhilaration was. I can understand it when its guns and cars. I understand the exhilaration. You probably won’t get the exhilaration what I am supposed to feel in an action film or a drama. I think that’s the translation what got lost. I didn’t mean to talk about it statistically. I only meant they would probably not know the exhilaration when they come out of the theatre. That’s what I meant. “
