GJPD looking into Friday’s assault at Department of Human Services – MASHAHER

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) – The Grand Junction Police Department is investigating a report of an assault with a baseball bat near the Mesa County Department of Human Services.

The incident originally occurred around noon, Friday, when an adult male became angry with DHS employees in the lobby before verbally assaulting and spitting on them, according to the GJPD.

A bystander allegedly confronted the suspect who then reached into a backpack, getting out a baseball bat and striking the individual several times. The bystander then reportedly grabbed the bat from the suspect, hitting him with it before leaving the area on foot.

Officers arrived at the scene and took the suspect into custody. He was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Law enforcement later contacted the bystander not far away from DHS. The individual was transported to a nearby hospital by the Grand Junction Fire Department for treatment of the injuries sustained in the assault, according to GJPD.

The individuals’ names involved are not being released currently until formal charges are filed, the police department said in a press release. The investigation into this incident is open.

GJPD said it believes this is an isolated incident with no ongoing danger to the community.
