JD Vance & Tim Walz Get Way Too Friendly – MASHAHER

The Oct. 5 episode of “Saturday Night Live” began with a political cold open mocking this week’s vice presidential debate.

Kamala Harris (Maya Rudolph) and her husband Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg) watching the debate from home. With Norah O’Donnell (Heidi Gardner) and Margaret Brennan (Chloe Fineman) moderating, Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan) and JD Vance (Bowen Yang) took mild swipes at each other.

Vance spoke to his awkwardness, beginning his opening statement with, “I want to begin with something that will appeal to women voters: I understand both moderators tonight are mothers, and I like that.”

Meanwhile, Walz evoked his teaching past, saying at the podium that, “I gotta grade these papers … I gotta stack of midterms.” He later evoked his biggest gaffe of the night, saying, “I’ve become friends with school shooters.”

The sketch took a shift to the emotional, parodying the candidates’ inclination to agree with each other during the debate. “This guy is good — he’s got an answer for everything” Walz said, soon turning to Vance and having a sensitive moment as the two reached out to touch each other between their podiums.

Vance ended the segment by complaining at length about not wanting to get fact-checked, saying, “

Joe Biden (Dana Carvey) then invaded Harris and Emhoff’s watch party with his signature ice cream cone, folksy wisdom and general confusion.

During the Season 50 premiere of “SNL” on Sept. 28, the sketch comedy series revealed Gaffigan and Samberg as Walz and Emhoff, respectively.

Gaffigan joined Rudolph in the season premiere cold open as the affable Minnesota governor and Harris’ running mate, while Samberg appeared as the Second Gentleman.

In the sketch, as Walz, Gaffigan quipped: “In Minnesota we have a saying: ‘Mind your damn business.’ We also have another saying in Minnesota: ‘My nuts froze to the park bench.’”

“SNL” cast member James Austin Johnson returned as Donald Trump, and Yang stepped in as his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance. Andrew Dismukes played “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir and cracked a joke about the ABC News debate being “biased toward the Democrats, which … duh.”
