Sonali Kulkarni, right now, is a prominent name in the Hindi and Marathi film industry. Although she started acting in films from the 1990s, the first movie that brought her on the map was Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai (2001), which also starred Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Dimple Kapadia. As the film completed 23 years recently in August, Kulkarni spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama.
23 years of Dil Chahta Hai EXCLUSIVE: Sonali Kulkarni recalls, “We rehearsed for ‘Woh Ladki Hai Kahan’ in 15-20 minutes”
“I feel Dil Chahta Hai is the highlight of my filmography,” she said. “This film gave me my identity. I feel the film turned out to be good in all aspects. Me being a part of it is a matter of pride for me because its casting, production value, story and cinematography turned out to be landmark in Hindi film industry. It’s difficult to believe that the film has completed these many years.”
The movie saw Kulkarni’s Pooja paired opposite Saif’s Sameer. Their song ‘Woh Ladki Hai Kahan’ is one of the strongest moments from the film. In fact, the song continues to rule over the audience’s hearts. The actress said, “Even today when I attend events, I am welcomed by playing that song from this film. People also make reels of it and send it to me. Just recently, Raghav Sachar used different instruments to create a reel of it.”
When asked whether while shooting the song they felt they are doing something big and memorable, Kulkarni was quick to say, “Absolutely not. The atmosphere in that unit was fun filled. The rehearsals for that song happened with fun and laughter in just 15-20 minutes. So, I never felt that way. It was fun shooting the song because people had become crazy with laughter after seeing my guffaw. We also enjoyed recreating the era where actresses used to change sarees in a single song. We were very happy while shooting the song. I was quite a newcomer in that unit, so I had no idea that this song was going to be successful at such a high level.”
Produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, Dil Chahta Hai was a coming-of-age story about three youngsters (Aamir, Saif and Akshaye) who navigate various developments in their lives.
Sonali Kulkarni was recently seen in the movie Love, Sitara, which is currently streaming on ZEE5.
