Runner hit by vehicle during Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon in Cudahy after driver experiences medical emergency – MASHAHER

A 28-year-old Medford woman was struck by a vehicle Sunday morning on the 5900 block of S. Lake Dr. while participating in the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon and Half Marathon after a driver experienced a medical emergency.

The Cudahy Police Department responded to a crash at 11:20 a.m., according to a news release.

A 68-year-old Waterford women traveling southbound on S. Lake Drive experienced a medical emergency and sideswiped another southbound car causing minor damage, according to the release.

The 68-year-old driver then stuck another southbound vehicle driven by a 65-year-old Cudahy man, causing his car to roll over on its side. The 68-year-old driver then stuck the pedestrian. Her car stopped in the tree line east of Lake Drive and north of East Henry Avenue.

The runner and two drivers were transported to the hospital. Their condition is unknown.

The southbound lanes of Lake Drive were open to traffic while the northbound lanes were closed for the race.

“This is something we never want to see happen to any of our participants,” Puente said. “We really do take safety as a top priority. So this is really unfortunate.”

This is the 42nd Lakefront Marathon, one of Milwaukee’s most popular marathons. Just under 5,000 runners participated in the marathon and half marathon on Sunday.

Racers started at 7 a.m. around West Wisconsin Avenue and North 5th Street and crossed the finish line at Henry Maier Festival Grounds. The marathon route wrapped along Lake Michigan.

This is a developing story.
