AM Turaz, the songwriter of Heeramandi, voiced his concerns over the lack of recognition given to behind-the-scenes technicians by actors. Turaz, who previously collaborated with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Padmaavat and Gangubai Kathiawadi, spoke candidly about this issue during an interview with Bollywood Now.
Heeramandi songwriter AM Turaz SLAMS actors for not crediting technicians: “Why did you work with directors, writers? You write it yourself…”
Turaz criticised actors for often taking full credit for the success of a project, overshadowing the efforts of the creators and technicians who work tirelessly to bring these projects to life. “If actors let the creators of the songs speak… The creators are not getting the appreciation that they deserve,” he stated.
This oversight, he argued, not only impacts the morale of writers but also affects their creativity and the quality of future projects. “In our industry, all the credit and the appreciation and the money is taken by them (actors). Because the creators are not given enough (credit and money), it affects their creativity and their next project suffers. When the creation is bad, the performances are also bad,” Turaz explained.
Turaz’s remarks underscore a broader issue within the film industry, where the contributions of writers, directors, cinematographers, and other crew members are frequently overshadowed by the prominence of actors. He urged actors to acknowledge the efforts of the entire team in their public statements and interviews. Using a pointed analogy, he said, “Why did you work with them (directors, writers)? You write it yourself, who is telling you not to? You should credit them because not naming them is like snatching their credit away. And it is unfair.”
The songwriter’s sentiments echo those of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who in a previous conversation with Galatta Plus, highlighted similar issues. SLB stated, “A performance does not belong to an actor. A good performance belongs to a director, dialogue writer, cinematographer, art director, costume designer, choreographer, editor, and the guy who has painted the wall behind you. You are saying ‘my performance,’ but you are never saying that these people are responsible for my performance. Everything is suddenly hijacked by the actor, which is where the problem in Indian cinema is.”
