Vegetation fire reported in Campo: Cal Fire – MASHAHER

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Crews responded to a vegetation fire in the Mountain Empire area of southeastern San Diego County Sunday afternoon, according to Cal Fire.

The blaze was reported to be on Cameron Truck Trail in the community of Campo. At 12:30 p.m., Cal Fire said it was at 2 acres “with a slow rate of speed.”

Nonetheless, fire officials warned that the blaze, dubbed the Buckman Fire, did have the potential to reach up to 100 acres. Cal Fire shared the following map, pinpointing the area where crews were responding:

In an update at 1:02 p.m., Cal Fire said “fixed wing aircraft have been released” to assist with firefighting efforts. Just 20 minutes, later fire officials announced the forward progress had been stopped at 2 acres.

Crews are expected tp remain on scene throughout the afternoon to strengthen control lines and extinguish hotspots.

This follows an Excessive Heat Warning that was issued for parts of the region Saturday. That has since expired but Cal Fire Capt. Thomas Shoots said Friday that peak wildfire season has began in Southern California.

FOX 5/KUSI is monitoring the situation and will provide updates as the situation develops.
