World No.1 Jannik Sinner beats Hubert Hurkacz in thrilling final to win Halle Open 2024 – MASHAHER

World No.1 Jannik Sinner captured his maiden grasscourt title by narrowly defeating his doubles partner Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(8) 7-6(2) in the final of the Halle Open on Sunday, June 23. This victory marks a significant milestone for the 22-year-old Italian star, who is also the reigning Australian Open champion, bringing his career singles title count to 14.

Hailing from Poland, Hurkacz had previously triumphed at the Halle Open in 2022. Both he and Sinner formed a strong partnership in the doubles competition in the same tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals.

The final proved to be a hard-fought battle, characterized by exceptional service games and powerful aces from both contenders. The first set saw each player stave off a break point, eventually leading to a gripping tiebreaker which Sinner clinched.

In the second set, the top-seeded Sinner had an opportunity to go 2-0 up but Hurkacz showcased his resilience by saving two crucial break points. Both competitors continued to hold their serves, driving the set into another tiebreak where Sinner once again emerged victorious, thus sealing the title.

Hurkacz trying to learn from Sinner

“It’s inspiring what you’ve been doing the last 12 months,” Hurkacz told Sinner. “Jannik becoming number one in the world is really special. I try to learn from that. Big congrats.”

Post-match, Sinner extended his congratulations to fifth seed Hurkacz for his impressive performance and reaching another Halle Open final. Their camaraderie was evident, reflecting the sportsmanship and mutual respect shared between the two athletes.

“We’re very good friends off court … seeing us play the final here is very special. Thank you so much,” he said.

Sinner is currently gearing up for Wimbledon once again, having made a significant impact last year by reaching the semi-finals. The prestigious Grand Slam event is scheduled to commence on July 1, and all eyes are on Sinner to see how he will perform this year.
