Veteran actor Nana Patekar, known for his powerful performances in films like Parinda, Krantiveer, and The Vaccine War, recently spoke candidly about his experience of working with director Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
Nana Patekar recalls “bad memories” from sets of Parinda; says, “I don’t like Vidhu Vinod Chopra”
Nana Patekar on Clash with Vidhu Vinod Chopra on Set
In an interview with Lallantop, Patekar revealed he has “bad memories” associated with Chopra, stemming back to their collaboration on the 1989 film Parinda. Patekar attributed these tensions to differing approaches to filmmaking.
“I don’t like Vidhu Vinod Chopra. I have no control over my anger. I am still the same. That aspect of my life hasn’t changed yet,” Patekar explained. “When the director says, ‘Lights, camera, clap’, if you aggressively say ‘action’, it starts to linger in your ears. It echoes and hurts your ears.”
Patekar went on to express his belief that this difference in direction caused friction during filming. “Let us be in our character please. What happens, when someone shouts, we forget the note that is required for the scene and unknowingly pick the director’s note. Just say ‘action’ calmly. Let us get into our character and note. It is because of this we must have had a tiff. I have very bad memories of him (Vidhu Vinod Chopra) and even habits,” he added.
A Turning Point for Hindi Cinema
Despite the reported clashes, Parinda was a critical success. Praised for its realism, the film is considered a landmark in Hindi cinema. It received critical acclaim, winning two National Film Awards and even being selected for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film starred an ensemble cast, including Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, and of course, Nana Patekar.
Looking Ahead
While acknowledging the complexities of their past collaboration, Patekar concluded the interview with a direct message to Chopra: “Vidhu, please hear this. I want to tell you all this to your face and not behind your back.”
Speaking of the professional front, Nana Patekar will be seen in Anil Sharma’s directorial film Journey.
