Upcoming period drama “Outrageous” has found its Mitford Sisters.
The six upper-class Mitford sisters — Nancy, Diana, Unity, Jessica, Deborah, Pamela — were the Kardashians of the 1930s, when they both dazzled and scandalized English society.
Nancy was a writer who wrote novels including “The Pursuit of Love” while Diana and Unity were fascists who were close to Hitler. Jessica was a communist, Pamela lived out the latter half of her life with a woman and Deborah became a duchess after marriage.
Bessie Carter (“Bridgerton”) will play Nancy, Joanna Vanderham will portray Diana, Shannon Watson (“The Jetty”) will play Unity, Zoe Brough (Casualty) will play Jessica, Orla Hill (Stonehouse”) plays Deborah and Isobel Jesper Jones (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”) joins as Pamela.
Toby Regbo (“Belgravia: The Next Chapter”) will play their brother Tom while Anna Chancellor (“My Lady Jane”) and James Purefoy (“The Veil”) will play the siblings’ mother and father.
Rounding out the cast are Joshua Sasse (“Love is in the Air”) as Oswald Mosley, Jamie Blackley (“Becoming Elizabeth”) as Peter Rodd, James Musgrave (“Einstein and the Bomb”) as Hamish Erskine, Calam Lynch (“Bridgerton”) as Bryan Guinness and Will Attenborough (“Our Girl”) as Joss.
“Set against the gathering storm clouds of the 1930s, masked by the decadence, frivolity and lavishness of British high society, ‘Outrageous’ will bring the full, uncensored story of the Mitford sisters to the screen for the first time – a story of family bonds and betrayals, public scandal, political extremism, love, heartache and even imprisonment,” reads the synopsis.
The six-part series, which is set to air on UKTV and Britbox International in 2025, is already in production. Sarah Williams (“Small Island”) has written the series based on Mary Lovell’s biography “The Mitford Girl.”
Firebird Pictures, a BBC Studios label, produce. The series was co-commissioned by BritBox International (for North America) and UKTV.
Robert Schildhouse, president of North America and GM of BritBox International, said: “History has found the Mitford sisters to be endlessly fascinating, and we expect the BritBox community will be just as captivated by their glamour and scandals. Sarah Williams and Firebird have captured the Mitfords’ unique and shocking story in ‘Outrageous’ and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
