Large brush fire breaks out north of Greek capital – MASHAHER

A large bush and forest fire has broken out in a densely wooded area about 20 kilometres north of the Greek capital Athens.

Authorities say helicopters and firefighting aircraft as well as hundreds of firefighters are working to contain the flames.

The fire follows a long period with little rain and several weeks with temperatures of about 35C.

In addition, strong winds raged in the region on Saturday, with gusts above 62km/h, according to the meteorological office.

Plumes of smoke spread and many areas of Athens reeked of burnt wood and ash.

According to reports by the Greek public broadcaster ERT, tourist facilities are not in the vicinity of the fire area.

Greece’s Civil Defence once again warned that the second-highest fire alert level would be in effect in large parts of central Greece over the weekend.
